With everyone from former President George W. Bush to Justin Bieber and Shakira posting online videos of themselves dumping buckets of ice over their heads in the name of charity, the viral “Ice Bucket Challenge” continues to dominate social media and has now raised more than $40 million for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

Donations to the A.L.S. Association, a Washington-based nonprofit that funds global research to find treatments and a cure for the disease, have surged since the challenge started trending in late July. The group said Thursday morning that it had received $41.8 million in donations from July 29 until Aug. 21.

More than 739,000 new donors have given money to the association. That’s more than double the $19.4 million in total contributions the association received during the year that ended Jan. 31, 2013, according to a filing with the Internal Revenue Service.

About 30,000 Americans now have A.L.S., which attacks nerve cells and ultimately leads to total paralysis, though the mind remains sharp. Life expectancy is typically two to five years from the time of diagnosis. The exact cause is not understood and there is no cure or treatment that stops or reverses the disease. One Food and Drug Administration-approved drug slows its progression, and other drugs are in clinical trials, according to the A.L.S. Association.

The flood of donations will be transformative for finding treatments and a cure for A.L.S. as well as for providing support to people with the disease, said Carrie Munk, a spokeswoman for the A.L.S. Association. The group now supports 98 global research projects and recently announced $3.5 million in financing for 21 others.

In addition, the Ice Bucket Challenge has raised awareness of the disease, which the A.L.S. Association said only half of Americans were aware of about a month ago.

“While the monetary contributions are so absolutely incredible, and we’ll be able to really make a considerable difference in moving the mission of the A.L.S. Association forward, the real fortunate part of the Ice Bucket Challenge is the amount of awareness it has raised for the A.L.S. cause in general,” Ms. Munk said. “It puts us in a whole different ballgame to find treatments and cures for this disease.”

Donations to the group have grown rapidly as a wave of politicians, sports stars, actors, musicians, chief executives and other celebrities joined in the challenge in recent days. The A.L.S. Association announced last week it had received $7.6 million in donations from July 29 through Aug. 14. Between Wednesday and Thursday alone this week, the group had raised an additional $10 million.

The average gift size from July 29 until Aug. 21 was $46.25, with the largest donation so far being a $100,000 individual check, Ms. Munk said.

The A.L.S. Association said that it had received many celebrity contributions but would not disclose the donors’ names for confidentiality reasons.

As Mother’s Day turns 100 this year, it’s known mostly as a time for brunches, gifts, cards, and general outpourings of love and appreciation.

It all started in the 1850s, when West Virginia women’s organizer Ann Reeves Jarvis held Mother’s Day work clubs to improve sanitary conditions and try to lower infant mortality by fighting disease and milk contamination, according to historian Katharine Antolini of West Virginia Wesleyan College.

Largely through Jarvis’s efforts, Mother’s Day came to be observed in a growing number of cities and states until U.S. President Woodrow Wilson officially set aside the second Sunday in May in 1914 for the holiday.

As for Mother’s Day being a hallmark holiday, there’s no denying it, strictly speaking.

Hallmark Cards itself, which sold its first Mother’s Day cards in the early 1920s, reports that Mother’s Day is the number three holiday for card exchange in the United States, behind Christmas and Valentine’s Day.

About 133 million Mother’s Day cards are exchanged annually, according to Hallmark. After Christmas, it’s the second most popular holiday for giving gifts.

Here we are at this years EXPO!

Business owners and representatives – a crowd of prospects – came to this year’s VALLEY BUSINESS EXPO held March 6 from 9-2. Attendees came to a new venue, the Glendale Hilton, to visit more than 80 exhibitors. The room was full throughout the day, as the crowd came and stayed. Morning refreshments, networking, and a series of great raffles kept everyone engaged. Galpin Ford provided a weekend rental of a Mustang convertible, Hong Kong Trade Development Council provided a beautiful wine and cheese basket and Sponsor Southwest Airlines gave away two free roundtrip tickets to anywhere it flies in the U.S.

Jave Tripp of print and design firm JNK Services, Inc., said “This is the third year I’ve been doing this event. The venue this year is a great plus – it’s got a new vibe, new people, more people walking by, and the quality of prospects are better. This year I’ve had the opportunity to get some leads.”

The LA Kings organization was also there, with cheerleaders, offering a drawing for game tickets.

This week we celebrate the 26th anniversary of J-n-K Services, Inc.  This great accomplishment would not have been possible without the help of contributing employees, past and present.  I want to thank my wonderful husband Scott Tripp whose support and principled, tireless work ethic, has made this company what it is today.  My daughter Stormy Tripp who has contributed her artistic skills and abilities, and continues to support our operation with her time, during winter and summer breaks.  My Mom, Mina, our Office Manager, who keeps the records of our accounting exact, and down to the penny!  Who better to keep our books than my Mom who is always looking out after our best interests. (The best part of course is that I get to see her every day!)  To Mary Evdjukian – For the logo she designed and her help in the rebranding of our company, which has made us stand out from our competition.  Thank you to Carol and Larry, our bindery and shipping department team, who come to work every day enthusiastic and happy to be part of our extended family!  Alan DeRosayro, I don’t know how he does it, but day in and day out, his graphic design skills are innovative and creative beyond my expectations. Alan is one talented dude! Thank you to Tom Rosen, our pressman, who produces work that we are proud to deliver to our clients.  And to Joy Valenza, our newest employee, who comes to work every day with great vision, knowing that she will be part of seeing J-n-K grow to our next level of success.
